May 2026 in Switzerland

The days are warmer, the landscapes are lush, and outdoor life truly begins

May is when Switzerland bursts into full bloom. The days are warmer, the landscapes are lush, and outdoor life truly begins. It’s a vibrant, feel-good month filled with color, festivals, and wide-open possibilities.

Alpine Meadows Wake Up - as the last snow recedes, alpine meadows in regions like the Berner Oberland, Valais, and Appenzell transform into carpets of wildflowers. Cows return to the high pastures, their bells echoing through the hills, and the hiking season officially begins in earnest at mid-altitudes.

Mountain Passes Reopen - Iconic scenic drives such as the Grimsel, Furka, and Susten Passes begin to reopen by mid to late May, depending on snow conditions. These legendary roads offer jaw-dropping views and connect travelers to tucked-away villages and spectacular picnic spots.

Perfect for Cycling & Outdoor Sports - with milder weather and longer days, May is fantastic for cycling, whether it’s lakeside paths in Eastern Switzerland or scenic climbs in Valais. It's also a great month for paragliding, kayaking, or even a refreshing (if brave!) dip in the lakes.

Local Festivals & Ascension Weekend - May brings traditional spring festivals, flower markets, and regional food fairs. Many towns celebrate Ascension Weekend with local gatherings, concerts, and outdoor events—giving visitors a peek into Swiss culture beyond the postcards.

Quiet Before Summer: tourism is still gentle in May, with fewer crowds than the summer season. It’s the perfect moment to visit places like Gruyères, Lauterbrunnen, or Evolène—where everything is open, fresh, and calm.
